I keep hearing the entire rave about natural gas and hydrogen fuel cells as the answer to our power generation problems. Fuel cells effectively improve the way we use energy regardless of what the energy sources are (hydrogen, natural gas, wind, solar), but that’s all they do. Fuel cells require either carbon sources or electricity (hydrogen, solar, wind) to operate and since carbon fuels are a limited resource, where is all that electricity going to come from in the future. At present our current alternative energy sources can only generate approximately 33% of our electrical requirements not including motorized vehicles, etc.
Hydrogen fuel cells for use in transportation vehicles is a valid power source due only to battery vehicle distance restrictions, but in reality it is a net loss of energy due to the process of converting electricity to hydrogen. Even though it's a net loss of energy to operate hydrogen automobiles it probably will be necessary. Compressed air vehicles will probably be cheaper to operate and should be in direct competition with hydrogen vehicles.
The use of fuel cells for either home or business
use is only valid presently because of the price of natural gas (limited resource) versus electricity and some efficiency
improvements. Natural gas
fuel cells in non motorized uses is one of the largest mistakes we could make as a nation and planet because it will reduce the value of creating an effective electric grid and
forces the world to be dependent on natural gas which is a limited resource.
The only valid use of fuel cells for a house or business will be in remote locations where electricity is generated from wind, solar or transported hydrogen and the efficiency of fuel cells will assist in the lack of power generation capabilities.
The planet has to stop thinking about using our limited carbon or natural resources based on artificial prices.
So again any argument that natural gas or hydrogen fuel cells are the answer to our energy requirements is a stupid argument. The only valid use for hydrogen in the future will be to transport electricity from one location to another or use in transportation vehicles. The only valid use of fuel cells for a house or business will be in remote locations where electricity is generated from wind, solar or transported hydrogen and the efficiency of fuel cells will assist in the lack of power generation capabilities.
The planet has to stop thinking about using our limited carbon or natural resources based on artificial prices.
Why is so hard for people to understand that carbon fuels is a limited resource and any long term energy security cannot be dependent on carbon fuels.
